How to Spot Fake Headphones?

“Nobody wants to end up with fake headphones, particularly if the intention was to buy the original. So I guess that you’re looking at getting new headphones and would like to know how to differentiate the original from a fake.”

Truth be told, it can be quite difficult to differentiate fake headphones from the original. It becomes even more difficult if you’ve never owned an original headphone. You have nothing against which to compare what you see at the store. That does not sound good.

Well, I brought Good news. Whether you’ve owned an original headphone or not, you can still spot a fake headphone if you know just exactly what to look out for.

Irrespective of the brand of headphones you choose to patronize, there are basic ways to differentiate an original headphone from fakes. These markers cut across almost all brands, and you must take the time to observe them. If you’re buying a well-known and much-loved brand, it is absolutely necessary to know these markers. This is because the bigger the brand, the more the fakes.

Not to worry, at the end of this article, you should be able to spot fake headphones with ease. Let’s get into it.

Six Simple Ways to Spot Fake Headphones

If you’ve never owned an original headphone, it is advisable to familiarize yourself with what the original looks like. By looking up product design and details on the brands’ official website and trusted e-commerce platforms, you can easily do that. Being familiar with the original product makes it easier to spot the fake markers when you see them. Some of the ways to identify fake headphones include:

  • Packaging

I know it sounds like I’m singing an over-familiar song, but packaging cannot be ignored. It is your first contact with a product and essentially tells a lot about the brand/product. If the packaging does not look like it, it is most likely not it.

Examining the packaging is important when buying headphones. Fake headphones packaging often have washed out colors and sometimes look old and worn out. This is in sharp contrast to the packaging of original headphones, which usually feature fuller and richer colors.

Specifications, instructions, product details, and other necessary write-ups on the packaging are usually written in clear, legible, and consistent letterings. There are neither faded letters nor ink-smeared lettering on the packaging of the original headphones.

The same cannot be said of the letterings on fake headphone packaging. Blurred letters, ink-smeared letters, or inconsistent lettering are indicators that you have a fake headphone in your hands.

  • Logo

Although this can be grouped under packaging, I decided to separate it for emphasis. Most fake headphones manufacturers have successfully learned to replicate the original, making this marker difficult to use. Still, a lot of fake headphones carry logos that are inconsistent with that of the original.

While some have slight, imperceptible inconsistencies, others have very glaring ones. One fake Apple headphone featured the apple logo with the bite on the left side instead of the right side. Sounds rather obvious, right? Unfortunately, it won’t be that obvious to someone unfamiliar with the Apple logo.

  • QR Code

The existence of QR codes has made it so much easier, including spotting fake headphones. These days, most brands of headphones, especially high-end brands, feature a QR code on their headphones packaging. If you doubt the originality of the headphones you’re about to buy, you can easily scan the QR code with your smartphone and verify its authenticity. It’s super easy.

  • Accessories

This marker may not be very easy to follow through in identifying fake headphones. The reason is that some sellers will not let you open the packaging before purchase. This option does not even exist for you if you’re shopping online.

Still, accessories are great pointers to the authenticity of a headphone. Fake headphones often have their accessories made out of cheap, low-quality materials. Poor finishing on accessories, lack of sturdiness are markers of fake headphones.

The color and design of accessories in fake headphones are sometimes different from that of the original. Then again, you will have to know what the original looks like to spot this difference where it exists.

  • Price

If you’re getting a high-end product at a ridiculously cheap price (cheap here is relative), you do not need to be told that what you’re getting is fake. Even though stores run discount sales, it is highly unlikely that you would get a headphone worth $120 for $30. Remember, the seller has to make a profit too.

To be fair, those outrageous discounts can be tempting. It is okay to buy them knowing that they’re fake, but you should never mistake them for the original.

  • Credibility and Location of Seller

Who you buy from is as important as what you buy. This is because who you buy from often determines what you get. The best way to eliminate the chances of buying a fake headphone is to buy from official product stores (online and offline).

If you’re buying in a physical store, buying from trusted stores and malls is important. It is very unlikely that you will get original headphones from street shops and corner stores, particularly if you’re shopping abroad. This is because these well-known brands hardly supply their products to those kinds of stores. Some of these stores cannot even afford to stock such products.

When buying online, verify the credibility of the seller, and read reviews. Avoid unverified stores and websites. Buy more from stores that have proven credible over time if you can’t get the headphone from the brand’s official store.
